Wayne Smith wins lifetime achievement award from international travel educators society

Congratulations to Hospitality and Tourism Management Professor Wayne Smith for winning the International Society of Travel & Tourism Educators (ISTTE) Martin Oppermann Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement for his service to the society.

ISTTE (external link, opens in new window)  is a diverse international organization dedicated to advancing travel and tourism education and research, with a well balanced mix of educators and professionals. Smith has been with ISTTE since 2003 when he won their Graduate Student and Future Scholar Award. He is currently a Director-at-large with the organization. 

Smith received the lifetime achievement award from the ISTTE because of his long-standing service and dedication to the organization. He served two terms as a Board Member, has been the Conference Chair four times (2008, 2017, 2022 and 2023) and was the Associate Editor for the Journal of Teaching Travel & Tourism (2020-2023), the professional journal of the ISTTE. Smith also currently has the most cited article in the journal's history, titled “Exploring Factors Influencing student study abroad destination choice.”

The Martin Oppermann Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement will be given out at ISTTE’s 43rd Annual Conference held in Hong Kong on October 16, 2024.
