It’s true in sport and in business, the secret to a winning career is to start off with the best coaching, training, teammates and mentoring. And Ted Rogers MBA students had a chance to hear that directly from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) graduates working in the sport business at a recent panel discussion and networking event.

The TMU Boldest event, organized by the MBA Sport Leadership Association (external link)  (MBASLA), aimed to connect students and alumni with sport professionals who can help foster meaningful connections and learning opportunities. It took place at Mattamy Athletic Centre’s Jet Ice Lounge on May 2, 2024, and was attended by over 100 people – Ted Rogers MBA students, undergraduates, alumni, industry professionals and the public.

The event showcased a speaker panel of TMU alumni who are accomplished professionals actively shaping the sports industry and making noteworthy contributions. The panel was made up of Tesla Beard (Senior Manager, Content Strategy & Programming, TSN), Teresa Spinelli (Senior Director, Partnership Marketing & Events, Canadian Soccer Business) and Angela White (Senior Director, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, MLSE), and was moderated by Maggie Aziz (Account Manager, Marketing Partnerships, Canadian Olympic Committee). The participants each spoke about their journeys in sport and how students and those in early stages of their careers can continue navigating the industry.

“As an association, we aimed to build on the success from last year's event and continue to grow the sport community within TMU,” explains Derek Colquitt, President of the MBASLA. “There were a lot of meaningful conversations highlighted by our amazing panel of TMU alumni.”

Eyosias Samuel, a recent Ted Rogers MBA graduate and MBASLA’s VP of Sponsorships, appreciated the insights and advice he received from the industry professionals at the event. “It was awesome that they stayed afterward to chat with many of us. I got to meet several professionals and connected closely with three of them,” he explains. “I had a fantastic time at the event and really appreciated how it helped build a strong TMU sport industry network.”
