Congratulations to the group of Ted Rogers School of Management undergraduate students who came in third at the 11th Schlesinger Global Family Enterprise Case Competition (SG-FECC) (external link, opens in new window) and to team member Jack Scanlon for receiving a Best Presenter Award at the event.
The SG-FECC prepares participants to understand the critical issues that are unique to family enterprise by applying the knowledge and expertise they have developed in the classroom towards solving complex family business cases. This year’s event was held January 10-13, 2024 at the UVM Grossman School of Business in Burlington, Vermont and included teams from 12 countries. Ted Rogers School’s team was made up of Jerry Gao, Payten Cervini, Kieran Gibson and Scanlon.
During the four-day competition, a different case was used each day which teams had to create presentations for. The first case was given to them a week in advance, while students only had four hours to read and prepare the other three cases, and no internet access was allowed.
Each team had 20 minutes to present their analysis and recommendations to a judging panel, made up of family business owners, managers, advisors and educators. This was followed by 10 minutes of Question & Answer. Teams were randomly assigned to a division within their undergraduate or graduate league, and competed in their division during the first three rounds. Top performing teams in each division then advanced to compete in the final round.
After finishing second in the Maple Division, the Ted Rogers School team qualified as a Wildcard Finalist and placed third in the overall undergraduate competition behind Grand Valley State University, Seidman College of Business (USA) and Universidad Panamericana, Guadalajara Campus (Mexico). For the individual challenges, Scanlon won a Best Presenter Award in the Maple Division.
