Ten international students of Asian descent will benefit from a $3,000 scholarship each to help them pursue their education at the Ted Rogers School of Management thanks to a generous gift from philanthropist Rebecca Pang.
Inspired by Pang’s own experience as an international student at Columbia and Stanford universities, the award is the first donor-established scholarship to support international students at Ted Rogers School.
This award opens the doors to education for international students who demonstrate promise, excellence and community involvement. Cost is the greatest barrier to education for students from abroad.
“Scholarships and bursaries of this kind attract talented international students, who then make Canada and Toronto Metropolitan University stronger, fostering innovation, promoting cross-cultural understanding and enriching the educational experience of all students,” said Dr. Cynthia Holmes, dean of the Ted Rogers School of Management.
“Thank you Rebecca for this gift allowing us to continue to renew and enrich the Ted Rogers School’s diverse learning environment by attracting international students who deepen our connections to the global community.”
Rebecca Pang’s gift to create the Chan & Pang Family International Student Award is being matched by the university through the President’s Awards to Champion Equity (PACE), meaning it will have double the impact.
“Creating a sense of belonging is so critical for someone new to the country and I am beyond excited to contribute to making talented young international students feel welcomed and supported as they embark on this journey,” says Rebecca Pang. “Establishing the award is my way of honouring my family and heritage, and bringing into action what I believe in my heart.”
An industry and community leader, Pang is the vice president, treasury solutions at RBC. She leads a team of specialists across Canada delivering cash management payments and liquidity solutions to business owners and entrepreneurs. She has worked in progressive leadership roles at McKinsey & Company and CIBC and understands the value of international experience having worked in Canada, the United States and China.
The creation of the Chan & Pang Family International Student Award strengthens Pang’s connection to Toronto Metropolitan University which began in 2014 with her appointment as a Dean’s Council member for the Ted Rogers School and as a lecturer on financial modelling & valuation. She currently serves as an advisor for the Ted Rogers Leadership Centre.
The Chan & Pang Family International Student Award will provide two qualified students annually with $3,000 each for the next five years. Eligible international students of Asian descent with demonstrated community involvement are encouraged to apply by October 1, 2023. Students can apply through Award Spring (external link) .
