Ted Rogers School of Management Accounting Professor Dr. Anthony Chan has been named Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (external link, opens in new window) (FCPA), the highest honour the accounting profession bestows, for his remarkable professional career and ongoing commitment to volunteerism.
The honour was conferred on only 57 of the organization’s more than 97,000 members in 2021, recognizing CPAs who have demonstrated exceptional performance in three fields of activity: professional career, volunteer involvement within the accounting profession and volunteer contribution to professional, community or charitable organizations.
For over three decades, Dr. Chan has made significant contributions to the accounting profession. As early as in 1986, he published his paper entitled “The Pattern of the Theoretical Basis of International Accounting Standards: Accounting Theory Models at the International Level” in The International Journal of Accounting. In the 1980s, international financial accounting standard setting was still in its early stage, but nowadays it is one major driving force for the global financial market and economy. He has also made presentations at over 40 international accounting conferences around the world.
Dr. Chan started teaching accounting at universities in Hong Kong 35 years ago. He emigrated to Canada in the mid-1990s, and joined Ryerson as a full professor in 1999. Since then, he has taught over 10,000 students in his accounting classes in the last 25 years in Canada (including 22 years at Ryerson). He has received several teaching awards during his career, including the Group to Renew and Enhance Effective Teaching (GREET) Award and the CESAR Instructor of the Year Award.
Dr. Chan has continuously made financial donations and contributed thousands of volunteer hours to professional and charitable organizations, and been appointed as an expert referee and reviewer for important public service agencies and professional organizations. To contribute his professional knowledge to the community, he has also been writing in ethnic newspapers and speaking on multicultural radio and TV public affairs programs for many years.
The 2021 CPA Ontario Fellows will be celebrated at the Fellows Evening of Distinction on February 25, 2022.
