Celebrating TRSM Faculty and Staff Achievements

Each year, awards are presented to recognize the achievements of TRSM faculty and staff. The TRSM community gathered on February 13, 2019 to celebrate the 2018/2019 recipients. Congratulations to the winners!
Dean's Scholarly, Research and Creative Activity Awards: Dr. Morteza Zihayat Kermani
Dr. Morteza Zihayat joined the ITM department as an Assistant Professor in July 2017 and became an IBM CAS Faculty Fellow in 2018. He established productive and well-funded data analytics research, coordinated two courses, taught innovative courses using new technologies to support his teaching practices, and was active at the institutional level in service.
Dean's Scholarly, Research and Creative Activity Awards: Dr. Jonathan Farrar
Dr. Jonathan Farrar, Associate Professor and Chair of the Accounting Department, teaches courses in income tax and researches ways for tax authorities to improve taxpayers' compliance, whistleblowing, and self-correction of tax errors.
Dean's Service Award: Dr. Yuanshun Li
Dr. Yuanshun Li, Associate Professor in the Finance department, has been advising and helping the Rotman International Trading Competition (RITC) Ryerson team every year from 2009 to 2018, during which time Ryerson team’s performance has significantly improved. In 2018, Ryerson’s team ranked 1st in the Flow Traders ETF case and 8th in the MATLAB Volatility case among university teams. His contribution to this competition greatly broadens the finance extra-curriculum activities, and substantially enhances our experiential learning environment in the Finance department.
Dean's Teaching Award: Dr. Laleh Samarbakhsh
Dr. Laleh Samarbakhsh, Assistant Professor of Finance, has demonstrated excellence in teaching in a number of ways ranging from the breadth and depth of her course delivery at Ryerson, including teaching innovation, mentorship of undergraduate research, pedagogy conference presentation and publication, and both numerical and anecdotal feedback by the students.
Dean's Teaching Award: Dr. Tom Griffin
Dr. Tom Griffin is an Assistant Professor in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and Assistant Director of the Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Research. His research interests revolve around Visiting Friends and Relatives travel in general, and specifically immigrants who host visitors and the implications for community development, individual well-being, and the tourism industry. He strives to engage students in class using different activities and technology to help students be active in the learning process.
Dean's Teaching Award: Else Grech
As a member of the Accounting Department, Else Grech is first and foremost an educator focused on student success through pedagogical innovation. She believes in continuously improving teaching toolbox as well as developing strong and lasting relationships with her students.
YSGS Outstanding Contribution to Graduate Education: Dr. Hong Yu
Dr. Hong Yu, Associate Professor of Retail Management and TRSM’s Interim Associate Dean, Graduate Programs, is instrumental in leading the development of the Ph.D. in Management proposal which was recently passed by the TRSM Faculty Council. Hong is well-connected internationally, and has made sure that her undergraduate and graduate students benefit from her network through impactful study trips and collaborative research projects.
Irene Campagna Excellence in Service Award: Khadra Abdulle
Khadra Abdulle is instrumental in ensuring that events at TRSM run smoothly. Her commitment to ensuring that each event coordinator is made to look like an event planning star is a credit to her abilities and professionalism in coaching, mentoring and guiding organizers through the maze of duties and responsibilities required to have a successful event.
Social Innovation and Action Research Award: Dr. Rupa Banerjee
Dr. Rupa Banerjee investigates the integration of immigrants and racial minorities into the Canadian labour market and society. With research that has significant implications for policymakers, employers, jobseekers and the immigrant-serving sector, her research is a stellar example of the socially responsible and relevant research produced by faculty at Ryerson University.
