TRSM celebrates its first cohort of Accounting and Finance students

Some 70 students graduate, half with distinction, from competitive program
June 26, 2017

For some 70 accounting and finance students, this month’s convocation ceremony was significant, not only because it was the first graduating class from the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF), but also because half of the class graduated with distinction.

"I am very proud of our first cohort of SAF graduates,” said Professor Daria Sydor, Chair of Accounting at the School of Accounting and Finance. “The fact that half of them graduated with distinction really emphasizes the quality of our students and program.”

Established in 2013, the School of Accounting and Finance provides its students with hands-on learning opportunities through its co-op program coupled with a rigorous academic curriculum.

In its CPA-accredited external,accounting program, students receive an experiential learning curriculum that equips them with career-ready skills to help make a successful transition in the workplace. For those who are interested in advancing their careers and pursue their Chartered Professional Accountant designation, they can enroll in the newly launched external,Professional Master’s Diploma in Accounting.

Industry-connected faculty within the CFA-recognized external,finance program teach students about personal financial planning, corporate financial management and investment management – skills that will give students a career boost upon graduation. Its uniquely designed curriculum also incorporates Excel modeling skills into the financial pedagogy, which adds to the competitive advantage upon graduation.

“I am very honoured to be among the first graduates in the SAF program,” said Anna Strungar, who was among the first cohort of graduates. “Reflecting upon the four years spent in the university, I realize that choosing SAF was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I had a chance to collaborate not only with knowledgeable professors who prepared me for the world’s challenges, but also with motivated fellow students, who were amazing team members and studied with passion. Thank you SAF for an amazing school experience!”
