The History of #HTMRyerson

Take a look into Canada's first hospitality program.

As we await the start of a new semester, we look back at the beginnings of #HTMRyerson and all the changes it has undergone over the past decades with its vision, curriculum, and construction.  

The Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management first opened doors in 1951, better known at the time as the Hotel Resort and Restaurant Administration Program at the Ryerson Institute of Technology (opens in new window) .

HTM 1951

1948 - Ryerson began as Ryerson Institute of Technology

1951 - Inception of Hotel, Resort & Restaurant Administration under the Institution for Home Management

1961 - Program was moved under the Business Division (which became the Faculty of Business) and was located in the Business Building on Victoria Street

1969 - Program name changed to Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Administration Department

1971 - Ryerson became Ryerson Polytechnic Institute

1981 - Program name changed to School of Hospitality and Tourism Management

1993 - Ryerson was renamed Ryerson Polytechnic University; Hospitality and Tourism Management moved into the International Living Learning Centre (formerly the IBIS Hotel)

2001 - Program degree changed to Bachelor of Commerce

2002 - Ryerson was renamed Ryerson University

2006 - Faculty of Business (now called Ted Rogers School of Management) moved to the new building on Dundas Street

2007 - Program name changed to Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management
