Putting women in the driver’s seat through a ride-sharing app

In Canada’s taxi and ride-sharing industry, 85 percent of drivers are men. With the alarming rise in cases related to the abuse or harassment of women using driving services, many women have become reluctant to use these modes of transportation. Not long after Aisha experienced a situation in which a driver made her feel in potential danger, Aisha launched the women-only service, DriveHER.

DriveHER is a peer-to-peer ride-sharing app that enables women riders to connect with women drivers. Safety is a priority, and DriveHER keeps its fares simple and transparent, so women riders won’t have to worry about surge pricing. A portion of each fare goes towards supporting women-focused charities.

Named by CBC Toronto in its Who’s Next series as one of five people who will change Toronto for the better in 2017, at a young age Aisha established her Power to Girls Foundation, a not-for-profit dedicated to projects that focus on the growth and empowerment of Afro Diasporic girls. With DriveHER, Aisha’s mission is to continue to empower women by providing them with a safe transportation option and a competitive economic model.
