Ulula

“Through our membership to the SVZ we were able to access a variety of funding pools such as the RECODE grant administered by Toronto Metropolitan’s Office of the Vice President of Research and Innovation, in partnership with the McConnell Foundation. These grant funds allowed us to pursue our partnership with the Peruvian government to pilot our tool for participatory monitoring of mining projects’ impact to prevent and mitigate social conflicts.”

The global supply chain involves thousands of suppliers. Struck by the inability of businesses to truly measure a supplier’s labour or social accountability standards, Ulula developed technology that makes supply chain transparency simple and scalable across sites and industries. With Ulula’s software solutions, companies can make better operational and procurement decisions while showcasing compliance with world standards. Conversely, Ulula’s solution leverages the ubiquity of mobile phones and social media to directly connect workers and communities to an ongoing, real-time dialogue that allows them to have a voice at the table and report problems securely and easily.
Ulula was launched in its beta platform in December 2015. It aims to have over half a million users by 2018. Ulula is passionate about enabling companies, governments, and civil societies to make better and more ethical business decisions, while ensuring that the world’s vulnerable and underrepresented populations are no longer fertile ground for human rights abuses.
Established by a global team with a combined 35 plus years of experience in international and community development, foreign aid, technology, and energy and mining, it is fitting that Ulula means “reveal” in the Southern African language Chichewa. Acting ethically creates a shared value among its stakeholders. Ulula sets out to achieve this by innovating and establishing a social enterprise that tackles one of the most challenging issues companies face in today’s global market.
