"We got something very, very valuable out of our membership in the SVZ – the mentorship. We still meet with our old advisor. We also benefitted from being connected to funding opportunities."

Co-founders Shaheryar and Maleeha met during their first year engineering classes at Toronto Metropolitan. Having both worked in food retail in the past, they witnessed atrocious amounts of good food being thrown away – all because of an arbitrary “best before” date listed on the packaging.

Eatonomy is a platform that sold and delivered to a customer’s doorstep vastly discounted food items past their best before dates, but perfectly safe to eat according to Canadian Food Inspection Agency guidelines. Consumers saved money while putting good food on their tables, and retailers created a stronger bottom line by recovering revenue that would have been lost due to discarded inventory.

Eventually, Eatonomy pivoted to Luup (external link) ; a customer-facing platform that incentivizes individuals to provide direct feedback to retailers. Retailers use this valuable data to make decisions.
