"With support from the SVZ, Children of Hope Uganda grew into a polished professional Canadian charity. The various kinds of mentorship I received were invaluable, and the enthusiastic encouragement from the SVZ team and fellow members helped grant COHU a rise from periodic challenges."

Lorna Pitcher, Founder

In 2007, Lorna traveled to Lira, Uganda, where she made a promise to help 43 traumatized children whose parents had been killed in massacres conducted by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army. In founding Children of Hope Uganda, Lorna partnered with Lira-based Executive Director Esther Atoo in working to promote the recovery and reintegration of war-affected youth and children in northern Uganda.

COHU is 100% a social enterprise, operating a nursery school and a vocational school, Barlonyo Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI). Caregiver households can now make a livelihood as well as help pay the school fees and scholastic materials for hundreds of beneficiary children through Income Generating Activities (IGA) such as a tailoring facility COHU launched in September 2015 named the Good Hope Garment Industry.
