Today, December 3rd, is GivingTuesday! GivingTuesday is the world’s largest generosity movement, encouraging millions of people worldwide to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. GivingTuesday Canada was founded in 2013 by CanadaHelps.org, GIV3 and several other founding partners. Internationally, GivingTuesday has active contingents in more than 80 countries, working year-round to inspire generosity around the world, with a common mission to create a world where giving is part of everyday life.
The Social Ventures Zone supports several social enterprises who are also non-profits or registered charities, accepting donations, monetary and otherwise, to further their ability to make positive change. We asked them to give us some insight into who they are and how your contributions can create a meaningful impact this GivingTuesday!
Who They Are
"We are Do Good Donuts, a start-up employment social enterprise delivering work-based training for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities."
Their Impact Area
"At Do Good, employees with disabilities work alongside supportive staff to gain the skills and confidence they need to be ready to work in jobs in the community."
What your donation will do
"Your donation will allow us to continue expanding our on-the-job training for young people with disabilities, and establish a permanent brick-and-mortar home for our program!"
If you can’t donate
"Spread the word about our program, or enjoy one of our delicious donuts or cookies this holiday season!"
Who They Are
"We are HERGhana (Health Education Rights Ghana), a Ghanaian-led organization that provides free menstrual health products and education programming to school-age girls in rural Ghana."
Their Impact Area
"Our goal is to bring sustainable solutions to period poverty, and keep girls in school."
What your donation will do
"A 25 dollar donation will sponsor one girl’s future through the distribution of a BFree cup and menstrual health training."
If you can’t donate
"If you can’t donate, please consider telling a friend where they can donate, or contact us through our website HERGhana.org to find out other ways you can get involved."
Who They Are
"We are dedicated to reducing senior social isolation through personalized music-listening experiences, and consistent social engagement."
Their Impact Area
"The social isolation of seniors residing in live-in care facilities."
What your donation will do
"Your donation will directly fund the delivery, and expansion, of transformative programs designed to reconnect seniors to treasured music and memories. Help us reach our next milestone of 400 participants every month!"
If you can’t donate
"If you can’t donate please consider volunteering your time or donating a gently used iPad."
Who They Are
"Your Genie is a user-friendly app that transforms the donation experience by connecting donors directly with those in need through targeted “wishlists” and geolocation enabled features."
Their Impact Area
"Vulnerable groups like low-income households, immigrants, and refugees depend on donated items, but donors often lack guidance, leading to unused donations in warehouses. This hinders addressing urgent needs, solving real issues, and supporting environmental sustainability through recycling."
What your donation will do
"We don’t ask for monetary donations. Instead, we invite you to visit our website to browse the wishlists created by our users in need. If you have an item on someone’s wishlist that you’re willing to donate, simply click the 'Donate' button. Alternatively, you can choose to purchase a new item for the person in need."
If you can’t donate
"If you can’t donate, please help us spread the word! We also have a free event TOMORROW, Wednesday, December 4th, at the Centre for Social Innovation (192 Spadina Ave.) from 5 - 7 PM. We’ll be screening short films about refugees and immigrants, talk about how we can help those in need, and we’ll have a raffle and some prizes for those in attendance – and you’re welcome to attend."
