Items We Do Not Accept

While the Sustainability Office’s Free Store strives to rehome and provide a second life to as many gently-used items as possible, there are some items we are unable to accept as donations.

Have an item you no longer need, but we can’t accept? Use the table below to identify organizations that can accept your donation or other eco-conscious disposal methods.

Ryerson-branded items

While the Free Store does not accept Ryerson-branded items, contact the Sustainability Office at sustainability@torontomu.ca for guidance. 

Office supplies

  • Outdated electronics 
  • 3-ring binders
  • Hanging folders
  • Desk organizers

Damaged or unsuitable items

  • Broken items
  • Stained or torn clothes (including used swimwear and undergarments)
  • Opened or repackaged food and drink items 
  • Over the counter medications and supplements
  • Opened or used cosmetic items

Safety and child-related items

  • Safety equipment (e.g. bike helmets)
  • Items for children (e.g.,cribs, car seats, toys, etc.)

Bulky items

  • Mattresses
  • Large furniture items (e.g. sofas, dining tables, etc.)

Books and educational materials

  • Outdated textbooks and other education materials 
  • Other books, paper or foam core/corrugated signs
