Executive summary

At Toronto Metropolitan University, we understand that the decisions we make today will shape a sustainable future for generations to come. That’s why we’re committed to taking bold and transformative actions that not only reduce the environmental impact of our university’s operations, but also foster a culture on campus where sustainability is a shared responsibility. Supported by partners from across the university, we’re adopting innovative policies and practices designed to reduce waste, lower emissions and reduce our campus’ carbon footprint. Through education and engagement, we’re empowering all members of our community to take meaningful actions—both big and small—that support a greener future for all Canadians.

TMU’s Sustainability Action Plan: One year on

In April 2024, the Sustainability Office reached a pivotal milestone in TMU’s sustainability journey, launching the university’s inaugural Sustainability Action Plan. The Sustainability Action Plan lays out a five-year strategic framework meant to guide the university’s plans for meaningful climate action across five key areas of impact: academics, research and innovation, operations, community engagement and partnerships, and administration and planning—defined by the university community.

The 2024 Progress Report provides a snapshot of the Sustainability Action Plan in action, highlighting key achievements, initiatives and work undertaken during the 2023-2024 academic year.
