5 ways you can support Circular Economy Month at TMU

October is Circular Economy Month (external link) at TMU!
A truly circular economy is one that values and prioritizes sustainable models of consumption and production and rejects throw-away culture. It’s time to disrupt our current linear economy by moving away from single-use consumption and adopting innovative approaches to reusing and repairing the items we use every day. Not only are we diverting waste from landfills–we’re also providing equitable access to essential goods and materials and maintaining the long-term health of the planet we all call home.
In honor of Circular Economy Month, the Sustainability Office is encouraging students, faculty and staff to participate in events and initiatives aimed at reducing our personal and institutional carbon footprints, as well as supporting TMU’s goal of becoming a zero-waste campus by 2035. By being mindful of our consumption and adopting strategies that minimize waste and promote a circular economy, we’re taking significant steps towards achieving the objectives outlined in our Sustainability Action Plan and contributing to a greener future for all Canadians.
How you can participate in green initiatives at TMU this month

Use the Waste Wizard and help TMU go green
Properly sorting your waste has never been easier with the Waste Wizard! A free online tool, scan the Waste Wizard QR code at waste receptacles across campus and quickly find out if your item should be recycled, composted or sent to landfill.

Give back by donating to the Free Store
On October 10, TMU community members are invited to drop off gently-used items at the Free Store as part of our fall donation drive. Not only will you be disrupting throw away culture and diverting waste from landfills–your donations will provide much needed items to TMU students!

Take home free stuff from the Free Store pop-up
By popular demand, our Free Store program has become a monthly pop-up! Hosted during the fourth week of every month, students are invited to visit the Free Store to take home gently used items like office supplies, electronics, home decor, kitchen supplies, books and more, all for free!

Help us break ground on a new pollinator garden
A truly circular economy is one that invests in initiatives aimed at regenerating nature and preserving biodiversity. That’s why partners from across campus are coming together to create a brand new pollinator garden, right in the heart of campus.

Give broken items a second life via the Repair Workshop
An exciting new partnership with the TMU Libraries’ Digital Media Experience (DME) Lab, students, faculty and staff are invited to bring broken or damaged computers, electronics, clothing, jewelry, books, and other non-hazardous goods to the Repair Workshop on October 30 to gain practical, hands-on experience with repairing common items.
