Plastic-Free July Week 3: Meetings and events
July 24, 2024
This week, our focus is on meetings and events, emphasizing how integrating sustainable choices into campus event planning can significantly reduce the environmental footprint of campus activities. For example, hosting a seminar without single-use plastics—opting instead for reusable utensils and compostable plates—can prevent a substantial amount of waste.
In doing so, we contribute to a healthier planet and set a positive example for the entire TMU community as we work towards the Sustainability Action Plan’s goal of a zero waste campus.
Beginner challenge
Grab a few coworkers for a zero waste picnic, enjoying the outdoors and building team camaraderie. Here are a few great venues to get you started:
In order to minimise unnecessary purchases and waste around events on campus, we’ve been working on a process to facilitate the sharing of event resources among our community members. Interested in participating?
- Share at least one item that you or your department are willing to loan out for campus events and meetings using the (google form) Campus Events Inventory Sharing Form (external link) . Items may include decorations, games, activities, etc.
- We’ll add your item to the catalogue of items we’re creating.
- By sharing an item you are willing to share, you’ll automatically be signed up to receive a notification when the catalogue is ready. As a result, you’ll be able to make use of other team’s items on campus.
Weekly tips for plastic-free day-to-day living
Sustainable practices in event catering
Events and meetings on campus may sometimes result in food and waste. Calculating food quantities per person can help prevent over-ordering and reduce waste. Also, encourage attendees to take leftovers!
Reduce the environmental and financial impact
Consider designating one or two people to carry out a sustainability check at the end of the event. For example, turning off the lights, fans, monitors and electronics such as the projector at the end of the event or ensuring that any waste left unattended is properly disposed of. For example, a half eaten food item left behind should be placed in the organics bin.
