New Sustainable Purchasing Guidelines available to kick off Climate Week

March 11, 2024

March 11 to 15 is Climate Week and we are committed to restorative climate action, responsible resource management and social sustainability. To underscore the call to action, the Sustainability Office is pleased to launch TMU’s Sustainable Purchasing Guidelines to ensure that we oversee our resources and purchasing decisions with ecological care.

The purchasing guidelines are centred around five key principles:

  1. Eliminate unnecessary purchases
  2. Prioritize circularity
  3. Assess total cost of ownership and/or life cycle cost
  4. Choose credibly eco-friendly certified products
  5. Explore sustainable and diverse suppliers

A complement to the Social Procurement Policy, these guiding principles can be applied to almost all purchasing decisions and keep sustainability top-of-mind throughout the entire life cycle of the materials we purchase and use.

Take a break and participate in Climate Week 2024

In addition to the launch of the new guidelines, the Sustainability Office has partnered with the Urban Farm and TMU’s Indigenous Education Council for TMU's second annual Climate Week campaign which offers engaging events and activities that highlight the interconnectedness of people, animals and plant ecosystems within the context of global climate change — and how it is affecting us all.

Sustainability resources at your fingertips

In addition to the Sustainable Purchasing Guidelines, the Sustainability Office has made key resources and campus data easily available to our community on the Sustainability Resources page to empower our community to reduce our negative environmental impact.

A global cultural shift is imperative to preserve and rehabilitate our fragile ecosystems and maintain our planet's vitality. The most powerful impacts and meaningful differences are made through concerted effort and collective action.
