How to Make a Direct Ontario Student Loan Payment
This guide is to help you make a direct payment toward your Ontario Student Loan (OSL). The government has announced the removal of interest on all Canadian Student Loans (opens in new window) (the federal loan). This means you can now focus on paying off your OSL (the provincial loan) without worrying about extra interest adding up.
-
Access the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) Portal: Log onto the NSLSC portal (external link, opens in new window) . Navigate to the Funding Summary section to view the breakdown of your Canadian Student Loans (CSL) and OSL balances.
-
Decide Your Payment Amount: Decide how much you will pay based on your personal money situation and goals.
Note: If NSLSC is already taking repayments from your account, any directed payment you make to your OSL will be in addition to your regular repayment obligation.
-
Draft a Letter to the NSLSC with the following details:
- The date your letter is written.
- Your full name as it appears on your loan documents.
- Your Loan number (for security purposes, do not include your Social Insurance Number).
- In the letter, write the exact dollar amount enclosed and instructions to the NSLSC to deposit all funds to your OSL. As well, indicate that you wish for any surplus to be applied to your CSL portion.
- Contact information (phone number and email address).
- Your signature - must be in wet ink (blue or black ink only, no electronic signatures).
-
Obtain a Bank Draft or Certified Cheque: Visit your bank and request a bank draft or certified cheque to pay towards your OSL. Banks typically charge a fee of $10 - $20 for this service.
Note: Make sure you obtain a bank draft or certified cheque. These offer greater security compared to regular cheques. If you opt for a regular cheque, you assume the responsibility for any challenges or misplaced cheques.
-
Send Payment by Registered Mail: Take the bank draft or certified cheque and your drafted letter to the post office. Send these documents as Registered Mail to the provided mailing address available on the NSLSC website (external link, opens in new window) . Do not send them as regular mail.
Note: Registered mail (external link, opens in new window) provides you with secure tracking info to determine where your mail is, and who signed for it when the mail is received. Registered mail ensures tracking and security. In case of loss or misuse, the student may not be liable.
-
Wait for Confirmation: Allow two weeks for the NSLSC to process your payment. After this period, log back into your NSLSC portal and review your Funding Summary to ensure the funds were correctly applied to your OSL balance.
If the funds were not applied to your account, or if you have any issues, please contact the NSLSC (external link, opens in new window) .
