New-Urbanist vs. Conventional Suburban Development: A Spatial and Demographic Analysis of Residents' Previous Neighbourhoods © 2009
This research paper undertakes a comparative analysis of the previous neighbourhoods of new-urbanist and conventional-suburban residents of three urban areas in Canada. It focuses on spatial and demographic characteristics, and utilizes both measures of spatial dispersion and logit modeling.
Findings are that the previous neighbourhoods of new-urbanist residents tend to be both closer to central business districts and more scattered in location than those of conventional-suburban residents. Furthermore, the previous neighborhoods of new-urbanist residents are more likely to contain features that are similar to new-urbanist neighbourhoods than those of conventional-suburban residents. Additional physical and demographic characteristics are shown to differ significantly as well.
