
Kristin Smith (In Memoriam)
The School of Social Work is deeply saddened to share news of the passing of our friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor, Dr. Kristin Smith. They were well known and a beloved member of our community. Kristin Smith is a faculty member in the School of Social Work at Toronto Metropolitan University. Smith has a PhD from the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education at OISE/University of Toronto and a Masters of Social Work Degree from McMaster University. Smith’s areas of research interest include promoting a critical analysis of neoliberal restructuring of health, social services, and other institutions, such as universities. Smith is also interested in how neoliberal restructuring shapes critical pedagogies in online social work education. Through research, teaching, and community action, Smith hopes to contribute to and social justice movements including queer liberation, disability rights movements, anti-Black racism, other anti-racism movements, radical disability / crip movements, anti-poverty activism and movements to end gender-based violence.
