Getting Started in the 6ix

Two women sitting for a conference turn to high five each other. Other conference attendees blurred in the background.

Through a creative partnership with the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (external link)  and the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) (external link) , this project engaged youth and civic leaders linked to Canada’s newcomer communities. Getting Started in the 6ix is continuing to talk about the vast contributions of newcomers with the intention of increasing Canada’s capacity for knowledge mobilization, innovation, inclusion, and co-prosperity. This project showcased the uniqueness of Toronto’s emerging generation of youth, exploring experiences and support systems that drive their entrepreneurial actions and remarkable results.

Over the span of one year this partnership provided research placement opportunities for three graduate students, collaborated with an artist collective to build an installation, involved a seminar at the AGO, launched a magazine and cinematic virtual reality video interviews (external link)  of newcomer entrepreneurs, and concluded with a panel event (external link)  that was led by John Raulston Saul (external link) .
