A lit candle, symbolizing remembrance and reflection for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Come together with fellow Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) community members to transform our mourning into action for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women memorial. Together, we will remember and honour the women killed at L’École Polytechnique in Montreal in an act of violence on December 6, 1989, as well as the Ontario femicide victims of 2024, as reported by Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses (external link)  (OAITH).

What to expect

The event is held as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which runs from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day).

This impactful event will feature:

The Government of Canada’s theme for 2024 is "Come Together, Act Now." This theme emphasizes the importance of involving everyone in Canada, particularly men and boys in changing social norms, attitudes and behaviours that contribute to gender-based violence. It is also a call to action to recognize the signs of gender-based violence and to reach out for support, for ourselves or our loved ones.

Organizing committee

The event is led by Consent Comes First in the Office of the Vice-Provost, Students and the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science. The organizing committee is made up of TMU community members from teams including the Office of the Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion (including Human Rights Services and Gdoo-maawnjidimi Mompii Indigenous Student Services); Centre for Safer Sex and Sexual Violence Support; Athletics and Recreation; Housing and Residence Life; Career, Co-op and Student Success Centre; Student Care; Workplace Wellbeing Services and Community Safety and Security.
