Anti-Black racism has been prevalent in our healthcare system from the very beginning. Its impact on Black communities has resulted in mistrust towards medical institutions, a lack of proper health care, and unfortunately poor health outcomes for many Black individuals. Because of these reasons and many more, anti-racist efforts have been pushed to address these disparities and work towards dismantling systemic barriers that impact Black bodies. The question is how much has changed from past to present? How will the future of healthcare reflect the needs and contributions of Black individuals and communities?
Pulling from her own personal experiences as a Black physician, Dr. McFarlane, Black Health Lead, from the Office of Black Flourishing in the Community, Culture, and Belonging section, will lead us through a talk on overcoming systemic challenges, to advocating for equity in medical education and healthcare, to practically playing a role in ensuring the future of healthcare will be one where Black communities are valued, represented, and will flourish!
