Rick is an accomplished creative and technology professional with over 30 years of experience in both the industry and academia. His extensive background includes studies in Engineering, a BA from the RTA School of Media, and an MA in Communication and Culture.
He has worked across multiple disciplines, including still photography, cinematography, lighting, directing, technical production, and consulting as a technology and systems designer for both studio and mobile setups. As a founding member and Vice President of one of Canada's most successful television facilities and production companies, Rick has played a pivotal creative role as a Director of Photography in the production of numerous children's shows, such as Shining Time Station and Polka Dot Door, as well as programs like Good Morning America and Entertainment Tonight. He also served as the official photographer for Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Quebec.
Rick has been a part-time lecturer at TMU since 1996 and a full-time faculty member since 2001, all while maintaining a current and active freelance career. His research has focused on HD bidirectional broadcast over IP and digital cinema, where he was a principal investigator and key contributor to the direction, design, and implementation of TMU's Advanced Visualization and Digital Cinema Lab.
Rick's work in virtual production began with pioneering contributions on the world’s first system for broadcast and film production using Unreal Engine. Recently, his focus has shifted to exploring new technologies and creative approaches in virtual production.
