Dr. Norah Lorway is an artificial intelligence and music researcher, composer and programmer who is an active performer of live coding laptop music. She is known for her work in the international algorave music scene and has been heralded by press such as MixMag as being “a pioneer” in live coding. Norah has performed at algoraves in venues and conferences throughout Europe, Japan, North America, and Australia such as NIME, Fortune Sound Club (Vancouver), Corsica Studios (London) and Incubate Festival (Netherlands).

Norah is also an avid film composer, having co-composed alongside composer Rose Bolton, the soundtrack for Anthropocene: The Human Epoch. The film was premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and Sundance amongst others. Sundance Institute listed her as one of “18 Women Composers You Should Know” in 2019. In 2020, she was nominated for a Cinema Eye Honors award for Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Score.

Norah is an active researcher working on various projects at the intersection of artificial intelligence, digital health care and sound. In 2018 she was the recipient of an Immersion Fellowship, funded by the large scale £6.5 million UKRI funded South West Creative Technology Network, a transdisciplinary research network meant to promote creative technologies for impact and social change in the south west of the UK.

Since 2020, Norah has been working on several projects with the NHS, where she’s been a principal investigator for projects with the UK’s NHS, investigating artificial intelligence assistants for dementia care in remote areas of the UK.

Norah has also founded two software companies which have carried out work for high end audio and scientific companies.

Norah is currently co-creating Scorch, a domain specific music programming language meant to make music programming more accessible and intuitive to a wide range of users.

In 2022, she co-founded the Studio for Creative Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) with fellow faculty from The Creative School, Debashis Sinha and Owen Lyons.
