Ted Darling

Edgar Lee "Ted" Darling (b. 1935 - d. 1996) was the original "Voice of the Buffalo Sabres" when the team joined the NHL in 1970. The former Captain of the Rams basketball team had stops in his early radio career in Huntsville, Sudbury and Kingston before joining CBC Ottawa as the TV Sports Anchor. In 1968, he joined CBC Montreal's Hockey Night in Canada as Saturday night intermission host. Upon joining the NHL, the Buffalo Sabres hired Darling who went on to call 22 seasons of play by play for the club. He is a member of the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame, the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame and, in 1994, was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame. When opening their new arena in 1996, the Sabres named the Press Box in his honour. Although his life and career were cut short by Pick's Disease, he fulfilled a lifelong dream following in the footsteps of his idol Foster Hewitt. A husband and father of 6, his passion and love for the game was evident in all his broadcasts.
