Two Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) psychology professors, Trevor Hart and Candace Monson, have been elected as Fellows to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) in recognition of their contributions to their fields.

Election as a fellow to the academy honours excellence in health sciences. CAHS Fellows, drawn from universities, health-care and research institutes across Canada, are nominated by their peers for this prestigious recognition.

Professor Hart works with communities of gay, bisexual and queer men to better understand their health-care needs, including HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevention and mental health promotion. He develops counselling to address those needs. Additional recognitions include fellowships in the Canadian Psychological Association, the Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies and the U.S.-based Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, as well as membership in Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. In 2016, he was selected as a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists. “I hope I can contribute my expertise so that the needs of all Canadians are met regardless of sexual or gender identities,” he said.

Professor Monson is a leading expert on traumatic stress, translating her research into clinical practice and training. She has developed innovative therapeutic treatments for people with post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as their loved ones. The co-author of eight books, including treatment manuals, professor Monson has been recognized with many honours for her work, such as selection as a Fellow in the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian and American Psychological Associations, as well as the Association of the Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies. “I’m honoured to be recognized by my peers through election to CAHS, and I look forward to contributing to the organization’s important work,” she said.

“I’m thrilled to congratulate professors Hart and Monson on being elected Fellows of the CAHS, recognizing their substantial contributions to the mental well-being of Canadians,” said Steven N. Liss, TMU’s vice-president, research and innovation. “As leaders in their fields, they have pioneered innovative, evidence-based interventions and counselling addressing complex health challenges.”
