CIHR Team Grant supports enhancing long-term care workplace culture through trauma-informed capacity building
A Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) researcher has received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grant to enhance psychological safety in long-term care residences by creating trauma-informed workplace cultures.
Nursing professor Rosanra Yoon of the Faculty of Community Services has received a Team Grant through CIHR’s Strengthening the Health Workforce for System Transformation initiative for more than $743,000, it was announced today. This funding supports research that addresses workforce challenges in Canada’s health sector, which were furthered by the COVID-19 pandemic, through evidence-informed solutions.
Together with researchers and groups representing health-care workers, professor Yoon will lead research with the goal of building trauma-informed organizational capacity at long-term care facilities to support the mental health of staff who were deeply impacted by the pandemic. By creating workplace cultures that are equity and trauma-informed, the research team aims to bolster the psychological safety of the long-term care workforce that cares for residents.
“Congratulations to professor Yoon and her collaborators on this achievement,” said Steven N. Liss, TMU’s vice-president, research and innovation. “Canada’s health-care system relies on its health-care workers. By addressing the vital issue of mental health, this research will promote impactful solutions for long-term care workers, benefiting the staff and residents.”
The team led by professor Yoon includes academic researchers and collaborators from organizations such as the Ontario Personal Support Workers Association, Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario and the Canadian Health Workforce Network.
