A Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) researcher has received one of only four Healthy Cities Research Initiative (HCRI) – Planning Grants for Implementing Healthy Urban Policy. This funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will support integrating research and best practices into municipal transportation policies and advancing healthy and equitable transportation planning.

School of Occupational and Public Health professor Linda Rothman is leading a team that includes representatives from the City of Guelph and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health. The grant enabled attendance at a recent five-day active transportation and public space workshop organized by the non-profit organization 8 80 Cities in Copenhagen, Denmark. Following the workshop, the team will organize knowledge mobilization events in Guelph, including a city tour, a design charette workshop and a panel discussion to inform and build community collaborations and future work.

“I am very excited to have received this innovative grant as it provides an exciting opportunity for myself, as a researcher, to learn and work directly with Guelph city leaders in transportation and public health,” said professor Rothman. “The learnings gained from the workshop and our knowledge mobilization activities will support future collaboration between city leaders and researchers to co-develop and evaluate interventions that create healthy urban spaces and promote safe and equitable mobility for all residents.”

“Many congratulations to professor Rothman and her colleagues on this funding success,” said Steven N. Liss, TMU’s vice-president, research and innovation. “This project supports putting research and best practices into action, applying important factors like equity and health to transportation planning and building healthier, more inclusive cities.”
