TMU is renowned for supporting student SRC activities by providing experiential opportunities to apply their education in real-world contexts. As research assistants, interns and entrepreneurs, students gain career preparedness for continued academic pursuits or post-education work environments.
Mitacs is a non-profit organization that helps bridge industry opportunities for graduate, post-graduate and postdoctoral students through internship and fellowship programs, bringing capacity to Canada’s next generation of research and innovation thought leaders.
Aliya Amarshi, a postdoctoral fellow in sociology, received a Mitacs Accelerate internship through its Scotiabank Economic Resilience Research Fund to explore whether and how pre-arrival services could improve the post-migration labour market integration outcomes of skilled immigrants and their families in Canada. Amarshi worked with professor Rupa Banerjee (Business Management) and partner organization Costi Immigrant Services.
Christine Hempel, a postdoctoral fellow in urban design and rural development, received a Mitacs Accelerate fellowship to review current best practices and precedents in selected Ontario communities to create new knowledge of feasible, affordable housing development strategies. Hempel worked with professor Shelagh McCartney (Urban and Regional Planning) and Tim Welch Consulting Inc.
Anthony Morgan, a PhD candidate in molecular science and director of the game company Science Everywhere, received support from the Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur program to investigate whether inducing playfulness can increase science curiosity and reduce political polarization. Morgan worked with professor Bryan Koivisto (Chemistry and Biology).
Jenelle Regnier-Davies, a PhD candidate in environmental applied science and management, received support from the Mitacs Accelerate program to research food sovereignty and food systems in Durham Region. Regnier-Davies worked with professor Sara Edge (Geography and Environmental Studies) and partner organization The Nourish and Develop Foundation.
Mariia Sozoniuk, a master’s student in professional communication, received support from the Mitacs Accelerate program to explore the public’s perceptions of roles and responsibilities for community recycling, working with professor Jonghun (Jay) Park (Graphic Communications Management) and partner organization Recycling Coach.

Arezoo Najibzadeh, a politics and public administration student, was named YWCA Toronto’s Young Woman of Distinction.

Frances Grout-Brown and Leorah Klein, graduate students in urban and regional planning, along with colleagues from York University and University of Toronto, were winners of the ULI / Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition.
Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science
Madeline McQueen, an aerospace engineering master’s student, was the only Canadian to be awarded the 20 Twenties award by Aviation Week Network, recognizing her academic performance, contributions to her field of study and community involvement.
Samson Abioye, a chemical engineering PhD candidate, received a 2021 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship in recognition of academic excellence and research leadership potential.

Mark D’Souza, a PhD candidate in medical physics, was awarded the Sylvia Fedoruk Prize for co-authoring the best publication in the field of medical physics.
Melissa Iazzi, a molecular science PhD candidate, was recognized with the Young Investigators Award at the 2021 European Cystic Fibrosis Conference.

Michelle Novotny, a master of science in management student, along with Raina Patel and Brian Riback, undergraduate students in hospitality and tourism management, placed second out of the 36 international universities at the Sustainable Hospitality Challenge held in Dubai.

Chris Donovan, a documentary media master of fine arts student, was awarded the 2021 Ian Parry Scholarship, one of the world’s top photography prizes for emerging talent.
