TMU congratulates faculty members who are recognized for their accomplishments, academic service and sustained influence in their fields through various honours and awards. The following is a small selection of the numerous accolades bestowed upon TMU faculty.
External Awards
Royal Society of Canada
This lifelong honour is among the highest a Canadian scholar can receive.
Cheryl Thompson (Creative Industries) was named a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in recognition of her emerging intellectual leadership as one of Canada’s foremost Black studies scholars.

Faculty of Arts
Sarah Elton (Sociology) was an inaugural winner of an Early Career Investigator Award from the Gairdner Foundation in recognition of her cross-disciplinary work on the relationship between human and plant health.
Dan Horner (Criminology) received the Canadian Historical Association’s Clio Award for his book Taking it to the Streets: Crowds, Politics and the Urban Experience in Mid-Nineteenth Century Montreal and was also selected as a Fellow at Massey College, along with Farzin Vejdani (History).
Faculty of Community Services
Sepali Guruge (Nursing) was named to the second annual class of Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Nursing for her sustained contributions to the profession's advancement.
Shelagh McCartney (Urban and Regional Planning) was named to the 2021 College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science
Umberto Berardi (Architectural Science) was recognized by Clarivate for Academia and Government in its 2021 Highly Cited Researchers List as ranking among the top 2% of the world’s most influential researchers for exceptional citation.
Owais Khan (Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering) was awarded a Banting Research Foundation Discovery Award, provided by Mitacs and the Banting Research Foundation.
Faculty of Science
Emily Agard (Chemistry and Biology) received the Royal Canadian Institute for Science’s William Edmond Logan Award on behalf of SciXchange for outstanding contributions to the public understanding of science by a Canadian organization.
Stefania Impellizzeri (Chemistry and Biology) received the 2021 PCCP Emerging Investigator Lectureship Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry, which recognizes and supports early career researchers who have made outstanding contributions in their field.
Lincoln Alexander School of Law
Chile Eboe-Osuji (Law) was awarded the prestigious Goler T. Butcher Medal by the American Society of International Law.
Ted Rogers School of Management
Anthony Chan (Accounting and Finance) was named Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario.
Ojelanki Ngwenyama (Business Management) received a 2021 Association for Information Systems (AIS) Fellow Award for his significant contributions to the field.
The Creative School
Marty Fink (Professional Communication) was the finalist for the LGBTQ Nonfiction Award from Lambda Literary for their book Forget Burial: HIV Kinship, Disability, and Queer/Trans Narratives of Care.
Scholarly, Research and Creative (SRC) Activity Awards
Nominated by fellow faculty members, TMU’s university-wide SRC Activity Awards recognize researchers for their emerging leadership in their fields, long-term or cumulative research contributions, or a specific project or collaboration shaping policy or advancing innovation.
The Early SRC Career Excellence Award went to three researchers:
Eliza Chandler (Disability Studies) leads academic, artistic and community partners in mobilizing arts-based research and research-creation projects to develop new ways of representing disability and experiencing art.
April Khademi (Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering) designs and translates image analysis tools utilized in clinical applications of radiology and pathology that use machine learning and artificial intelligence software to model disease in a new and unique way.
Atefeh Mashatan (Information Technology Management) studies the development of novel cybersecurity designs based on emerging technologies, such as Internet-of-Things, blockchain and quantum computing, in collaboration with academic and industry partners.
The Collaborative SRC Award went to Julie James (Child and Youth Care), who deploys anti-racist, gender-inclusive and decolonial critical social theory frameworks to guide trans-youth-led, community-based research towards a model of care that can be applied to local and global health care, education and legal services.
The Knowledge Mobilization and Engagement Award was given to Erin Ziegler (Nursing) in recognition of her work to promote health equity and the well-being of gender and sexual minority communities, including the co-development of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity eLearning Toolkit to improve knowledge and competence among practitioners.
The Social Innovation and Action SRC Award went to Linda Zhang (Interior Design) for her engagement with relevant stakeholders and affected communities to innovate and deploy effective solutions to address systemic challenges.
Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award
Alagan Anpalagan (Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering), an internationally recognized research leader in wireless communications engineering, was this year’s recipient. His work fosters the discovery and demonstrates the application of engineering principles to solve real-world problems. Anpalagan has authored over 350 papers and edited six books, including the first handbook on green information and communication systems.
The annual Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award is given to one or more university faculty members in recognition of outstanding contributions to their research discipline. The award is made available through the joint contributions of Sarwan Sahota, a retired professor, and Toronto Metropolitan University.
Dean's Scholarly, Research and Creative (SRC) Activity Award
The annual Dean’s SRC Activity Award recognizes individual faculty members for outstanding SRC achievements, teaching and service during the preceding academic year.
