Executive Summary
During the 2021–22 fiscal year, Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) received total research funding of $85.2 million in support of scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activities. Tri-Agency funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) totalled $24.5 million.
During this time, the university received its first NSERC Alliance Missions Grant, a prestigious Tri-Agency award for projects that drive societal impact. In addition, the Tri-Agency conferred three newly named Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs and two Canada Research Chair renewals upon university faculty. This report also highlights the several NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) grants and other distinguished Tri-Agency funding awards received this fiscal year.
The university’s SRC activity earned generous support from all three levels of government, including an increase of 165.2% in municipal funding over the last fiscal year. TMU faculty were recognized for their expertise and excellence in their disciplines, receiving numerous honours and accolades, including the induction of one scholar into the Royal Society of Canada for emerging intellectual leadership in their field.
TMU’s researchers continued to demonstrate increased knowledge mobilization and influence, with an increase of 21.6% in publication citations and 7.6% in academic publications over the previous reporting period.
