Ryerson students are making their mark across a wide range of research fields, from aerospace engineering to health sciences and sustainable architectural design. We are pleased to congratulate some of our outstanding graduates and undergraduates on their achievements and look forward to watching their trajectory as scholars, HQPs and citizens enacting change in their communities.
Faculty of Arts
In recognition of their academic excellence and research leadership, two Psychology PhD students each received Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships to support their research. Rachel Bar will develop a study on the benefits of dance programs for people with Parkinson’s disease. Fiona C. Thomas will conduct research on displaced migrants returning to their homes in post-conflict Sri Lanka.
Fourth-year BA English student Edward Manapul’s paper, “How power structures the colonized and colonizer in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897),” was selected for publication in Empowering emerging voices, the Conference Proceedings of QUEUC – The Quebec Universities English Undergraduate Conference. Each proposed paper is submitted to a rigorous triple-blind peer review.
Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science
Aerospace Engineering PhD candidate Emily Gleeson received a 2018 Amelia Earhart Fellowship. Bestowed by the Zonta International Foundation, the fellowship honours women for their strong academic doctoral work in aerospace-related engineering and sciences.
Undergraduate Architectural Science students Adrian Chiu, Arnel Espanol and Henry Mai were among the winners of the Winter Stations Design Competition 2018 for an installation titled, “NEST,’’ which appeared at Toronto beaches from February 19 to April 1, 2018.
Faculty of Communication and Design
Fashion students Ashley Muir and Charlotte Carbone took first place in a national competition to redesign the Canada Post uniform. The competition, Readdress the Postal Uniform, was hosted by Logistik Unicorp in collaboration with Canada Post.
A team of eight Graphic Communications Management students were recipients of the 2018 Helmut Kipphan Student Publication Award, an annual competition held by the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts. The achievement marks the seventh time in 10 years that a Ryerson team received this international prize.
Faculty of Community Services
Three students in the Midwifery Education Program were recipients of the inaugural Toronto Eglinton Rotary Club/Dr. Robert McClure Award in Health Science, which recognizes Indigenous and First Nations students in Ryerson’s health sciences programs. Jasmine Allan-Sferruzzi, Alyssa Gagnon and Sarah Martineau each received bursaries for their commitment to improving healthcare in Indigenous communities.
Nutrition student Jennifer Lee received the 2017 Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism Undergraduate Research Excellence Award for her paper on the effects of carbohydrates consumed by children at breakfast. The award was presented by Canadian Science Publishing in partnership with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and the Canadian Nutrition Society.
Faculty of Science
A paper about using models based in deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) to extract software usage information was written by Computer Science Master’s student Domenic Curro and published by IEEE Press. He also presented his findings at the 39th International Conference on Software Engineering held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Biology student Morla Phan received a 2017 Highly Commended Award in the Life Sciences category of the Undergraduate Awards, the world’s largest academic awards program. Morla’s work on identifying biomarkers for breast cancer advanced to the top 10 per cent out of 6,500 submissions in her category.
Ted Rogers School of Management
A team of 17 Ted Rogers School of Management students won 24 medals at the DECA Collegiate International Career Development Conference (ICDC) held in Washington, DC. They came from different TRSM departments, including Fashion Merchandising and Marketing, Travel and Tourism, and Human Resource Management. DECA is an international student network focused on instilling professionalism in young people and preparing them for the challenges of business.
Former PhD student in Computer Science Morteza Zihayat received the Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award - Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from York University. He is now an assistant professor in the School of Information Technology Management at Ryerson.
