The Vice-Provost and Dean, Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (YSGPS) is responsible for the overall vision and leadership of graduate education.

About Carl Kumaradas

As interim vice-provost and dean, Carl is responsible for the overall vision and leadership of the university’s graduate education and postdoctoral research fellowships.

An acclaimed leader at YSGPS, Carl most recently was the associate dean, programs for nearly four years. He is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and previously held the role of interim chair of the department. With more than nine years experience as graduate program director for the physics program, Carl has led the development of its PhD degree and the implementation of a new program option designed to meet the standards of its accrediting body.

Carl holds a bachelor of applied science in electrical engineering and a master’s of science and PhD in medical biophysics, all from the University of Toronto. His research explores computational modelling in biomedical physics with a focus on the use of nanoparticles for cancer detection and treatment. He is actively involved in collaborative research with an industrial partner to work on translating his basic science research into clinical practice.

Throughout his career with Toronto Metropolitan University, Carl has supervised 26 graduate students and two postdoctoral fellows, published 21 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and been involved in externally funded grants totalling approximately $2.3 million.

Responsibilities 

As chair of the YSGPS Council, the Vice-Provost and Dean, YSGPS oversees strategic directions in graduate expansion, enrolment management, student funding, YSGPS membership, personnel matters and external liaison.

The Strategic Plan is the result of consultations with the university graduate community and is a collaborative effort between YSGPS and all faculties on campus.
