Professor Gregory Levey, founding CEO of the revolutionary medical platform Figure 1, has made headlines this week with the acquisition of his start-up by the medical information firm, Physician's Weekly. This move marks a significant achievement not just for Figure 1 but for the entire Toronto Met U.

Founded in 2012 and incubated at TMU’s Digital Media Zone, Figure 1 quickly became known as the “Instagram for doctors”. It is a collaboration platform where clinicians can post medical queries and it’s transformed how medical professionals around the globe share and discuss cases.

The platform’s promise and early success led to significant financial support and attracted attention from major investors such as Samsung NEXT, Union Square Ventures, Version One Ventures, and Manulife. Figure 1 received $2 million in seed funding in 2013, which grew to a robust $13 million in Series B funding by 2017.

In 2022, Figure 1 reached 100,000 cases, cementing its status as the world's largest library of medical cases and a critical resource for healthcare professionals globally. Their mission to improve patient outcomes through collaborative consultation has proven to be highly effective, with 40% of clinicians reporting that the Figure 1 platform has helped them solve complex medical issues previously at a standstill.

The acquisition of Figure 1 by Physician's Weekly is a win worth celebrating because it validates the innovative spirit emanating from TMU. It serves as a powerful reminder of the exceptional talent present at this school and the extraordinary outcomes that can be achieved when such talent is fostered through dedicated programs and supportive ecosystems.

For students in Professional Communication, the opportunity to learn from a leader like Professor Levey is invaluable. His academic achievements and hands-on experience as a trailblazing entrepreneur are both instructive and inspirational. Figure 1 has also served as launchpad for many Professional Communication students employed by the start-up.

As Figure 1 begins its new journey under the wings of Physician's Weekly, the partnership is poised to continue enhancing the quality of medical communication and problem-solving. This is a true success story — one that encourages students and aspiring entrepreneurs to believe in their great ideas, and shows that with the right support, transformative innovations can flourish.
