Mujtaba Haris is a journalist, poet, and human rights activist who has written on human rights, humanitarian crises, and conflicts for Al Jazeera, Business Insider, and other international media outlets.

As the William Southam Journalism Fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto, for the 2021-2022 academic year, Haris deepened his understanding of journalism's evolving role in an ever-changing media landscape. He is an ardent believer in the transformative power of media and technology, recognizing their potential to inform, educate, and empower individuals and communities.

His doctoral research endeavors to revolutionize citizen journalism. Having witnessed firsthand the daunting obstacles confronting Afghan journalists, from censorship to violence and limited access to information, Haris’s project aims to equip citizen journalists with the necessary tools and training. He envisions the creation of an online platform that will empower citizens in countries with savior restrictions on freedom of speech and access to information to share their stories with a broader audience, amplifying their voices and fostering positive change in a challenging media landscape.
