Augusta “Gus” Monet (all pronouns) graduated from the Performance Acting program in 2019. Gus is an interdisciplinary theatre artist and drag performer based in Toronto. By night, they can be found as the drag king Coyote Ugly. Gus enjoys a wide variety of theatre practices but finds themself most drawn to the edges of the spectrum. She equally enjoys classical, new, and experimental theatre. He loves clowning and comedy, and is interested in exploring developments in interdisciplinary and intermedia performance arts. Gus Monet is a formally trained actor from the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Performance. Other credits include: Mephistophilis, “Doctor Faustus”, Apothecary Theatre (2023-24); Lavinia, “Who’s Afraid of Tutus, Eldritch Theatre (2022); Dungeon Master, “The Role Play”, Hamilton Fringe (2022); Conrad/Margaret, “Much Ado About Nothing”, Brampton’s Own Shakespeare Show (2022); Goose, “Goose’s Valentines Day Extravaganza” (2021); ; Ensemble, “Les Gars”, (2020); Playwright, “Dead Funny”, Super Wonder Gallery (2020); Miss Shields, "A Christmas Story", Lower Ossington Theatre (2019-20); Playwright/Raccoon, "Equinox", Dark Crop Theatre Festival (2019). Gus is passionate about art as activism and as a means of catharsis. Their work through their theatre company, @apothecarytheatreco centres around community, challenging norms, queer body politic, and theatre as ritual.

My most memorable time [in Performance] would have to be doing clown in third year. I really felt so much about my practice as an actor and as a drag king click, and it was also an incredibly joyful experience where I learned to not be afraid of my failures and to cherish them instead!

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival (external link)  "is one of the greatest celebrations of arts and culture on the planet and takes place every August in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city." Gus Monet (Performance Acting '19) is performing in Doctor Faustus at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival from August 13th to 25th with Toronto based company Apothecary Theatre (external link) . The performance, Doctor Faustus, has also been invited to present at Spotlight Canada: The Pitch Session 2024 (external link)  where the High Commission of Canada in the UK is providing opportunities for Canadian artists to receive international exposure and market development support during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Gus describes the experience of taking Doctor Faustus to the global stage as "really satisfying and exciting to dig back into something James (my co-adaptor and Doctor Faustus) and I both know very well and love deeply, as there is always something new to explore and dig for. Adapting it for a proscenium stage from a semi-round staging has been a really interesting dimension to the show this time, as we play with space and distance from each other. The fact we get to perform this very old play in a literal cave in Edinburgh couldn't feel more right."

After their run in Edinburgh, Gus will continue to work with Apothecary Theatre and James in writing and researching a piece about Renaissance Magic centering on John Dee and Edward Kelly entitled "Mortlake".

Coming back from Edinburgh, Apothecary has plans to start production on our next show, a re-imaging of a Shakespearean classic with a cast entirely of Drag performers. My producer says I can't drop the name of the show yet but we are very excited to dive into it.
