Feature preceptor: Jenelle McAuley
Why do you choose to take on the role of a preceptor?
I was always very grateful for the preceptors I had as an intern and wanted to return the favour to the profession. Without preceptors, we cannot have dietitians.
What do you believe is the most important role a preceptor plays in augmenting a student’s education?
Preceptors act as a safety net. This is a time for students to experiment with different approaches to care and find their style of counselling, they should not be afraid to fail.
Please share any tips to precepting dietetic students you have found effective?
I find it helpful to put students in the driver's seat. Ask them how they would approach situations or answer questions and then demonstrate any difference you would take in your approach.
What do you do to prepare yourself for precepting a dietetic student?
I remind myself what it was like to be a student and what would have been helpful or conducive learning environment.
What do you perceive to be the professional benefits of becoming a preceptor?
I think it is refreshing to have new thoughts and perspectives in the profession. It also keeps us on our toes and up to date with information to ensure we are teaching interns the correct standards of care.
What do you perceive are the personal benefits of precepting a student?
It is very rewarding to meet someone and watch them grow and learn as a professional. It is always helpful when they can practice independently and I can check some things off my ever growing to do list!
