Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program Placement FAQs

Students starting Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis I (AHAD I) must pass a mandatory Head-to-Toe assessment within the first 2 weeks of the Fall semester. Refer to dates on the PHCNP calendar on the Central Registry Database (CRDB)/Canvas (external link) .

Students will not be permitted to begin clinical placements until their AHAD I Course Instructor has confirmed the student has passed this assessment.

The program provides an optional 1 day Head-to-Toe Refresher Course at the end of August. Information will be shared with AHAD I students registered for the Fall.

You will have access to the equipment that you need for each weekly module that you have been taught during class time. In addition, clinical labs will be available for you to practice new skills.

At the beginning of each semester, a schedule will be available on Google Drive for you to sign up for additional lab time which will be shared by Professional Practice and Skills Coordinator. (opens in new window)

No, students are not permitted to secure their own clinical placements. The NP Placement Coordinator (opens in new window)  is responsible for this process. If you attempt to secure your own placement, it will be immediately canceled and will not be considered.

No, students are not permitted to secure their own preceptor. The NP Placement Coordinator (opens in new window)  is responsible for this process.

They are qualified professionals who hold either an MD or NP designation, and who are responsible for supervising and guiding you during your clinical placement.

Residing in another university's catchment area does not guarantee placement in that location. TMU must seek approval from the respective university to explore placements in their catchment, and this only happens after they have secured placements for their own NP students. This process often exceeds our deadlines for securing placements.

Refer to Ontario Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program: "Clinical Placements" (external link, opens in new window)  for information on the TMU catchment area.

Students are required to travel for clinical placements and must familiarize themselves with the TMU catchment area. It is your responsibility to make necessary travel arrangements.

By completing the information in CRBD (external link, opens in new window) . The NP Placement Coordinator uses CRBD to explore opportunities that align with your interests. Individual email requests will not be considered. Early completion of this information is to your advantage. It takes the placement coordinator 4-6 weeks minimum to organize relevant logistics associated with the placement.

Requests for specific clinical placements or preceptors can be submitted through CRBD (external link, opens in new window) . However, these requests are considered suggestions and are not guaranteed. The primary goal is to fulfill the PHCNP objectives.

Clinical placements are non-negotiable; once you are placed there will be no changes. It is also your responsibility to adapt your personal schedule to accommodate the requirements of the clinical placement, including the preceptor’s schedule.

Refer to the PHCNP Program General Terms and Conditions found in the Welcome Package (opens in new window) .

If you have an extenuating circumstance and self-identify as requiring an accommodation for your clinical placement, you must get in touch with the Academic Accommodation Support Office (AAS) and meet with a student accomodation facilitator. It is very important to initiate this process well in advance of your placement assignment. Placement Coordinators require accommodation information to negotiate your placement with our partners and to ensure they are securing a placement that meets your needs, ensures your safety and aligns to course objectives.

Please note that according to AAS, it is beneficial to be in touch with your Student Accommodation Facilitator at least one semester before your placement (opens in new window)  to start working out a plan.
