We all play a role in keeping our campus safe and welcoming for all community members

As a reminder, these policies set expectations for behaviours on campus around bringing animals to campus and smoking and vaping on campus. Designed with considerations for equity, diversity and inclusion in mind, we ask that you please familiarize yourself with the policies and support us in creating a campus where all community members feel welcome.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What should I do if I notice a wild animal or pet on campus or in the Kerr Hall Quad?

TMU’s Animals on Campus Policy permits service animals for persons with disabilities and animals used to deliver an academic or research program service. Leashed pets are permitted on City of Toronto-owned properties or streets, as per  (PDF file) Toronto’s Animals Bylaw (external link) .

If you become aware of a wild animal on campus, a pet inside a campus building or a pet in a TMU-owned outdoor property like the Kerr Hall Quad, please contact TMU Security at security@torontomu.ca or 416-979-5040. While TMU Security will make every effort to speak to the pet’s owner, it is not uncommon for an individual to have left by the time TMU Security is dispatched.

What should I do if I notice someone smoking or vaping on campus?

As per the Smoking and Vaping Policy and in alignment with the Smoke Free Ontario Act (external link) , smoking and vaping are not permitted:

  • inside any enclosed university property (including any place, buildings, residences, structure or vehicle that is covered by a roof);
  • inside any enclosed public spaces (including event spaces and workplaces);
  • within 20 meters of the TMU Early Learning Centre children’s playground;
  • within 9 meters of TMU University-owned building entrances, exits, loading docks, fresh air intakes, and compressed gas storage areas; and
  • in the Kerr Hall Quad (the green space located within the four sections of the Kerr Hall building).

If you’re concerned that an individual is smoking or vaping on campus, please contact TMU Security at security@torontomu.ca or 416-979-5040. While TMU Security will make every effort to speak to the individual, it is not uncommon for an individual to have left by the time TMU Security is dispatched.
