See what’s happening on campus for Black History Month, plus dance, learning sessions and more

This month, TMU is hosting many engaging events for Black History Month, including a community mixer, an edit-a-thon, a tour of the Libraries and more. Find something for everyone in the events listed below.

February may be the shortest month, but TMU still has lots to keep you busy! From Black History Month events to a variety of workshops and sessions, we’ve rounded up some highlights below. You can visit the TorontoMet Today website for a full list.

Feb. 1-8
TMU Bold Black History Month Walk of Fame
Celebrate Black culture and achievement in athletics with the TMU Bold Walk of Fame. Throughout the month of February, visit the Mattamy Athletic Centre to learn about great athletic accomplishments in the university’s history. In partnership with the TMSU.

Feb. 4
The 2025 Bold, Beautiful & Brilliant Speaking Engagement with Olympian Athlete and Activist, Dr. John Carlos
At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, U.S. sprinter John Carlos climbed onto the podium and raised his fist in a powerful protest for civil rights. The moment was captured in an iconic photo and became a symbol of resistance and courage worldwide. On Feb. 4, Carlos, now 79, will speak at TMU in honour of Black History Month. The event is free for students, faculty and staff.

Feb. 5
Black Histories Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
Representation matters. Not just on screens and pages, but in the information and data we share. Join us in the Library Collaboratory to celebrate Black History Month by learning to edit Wikipedia. Anyone can make a difference by helping to improve coverage of Black histories online.

Feb. 5
Confronting Imposter Syndrome
In your journey through graduate studies, you may encounter moments of self-doubt and uncertainty, commonly known as Impostor Syndrome. In this workshop, you’ll learn to resist procrastination and perfectionism in a safe and supportive environment. Explore this phenomenon, share personal insights and discover effective strategies for overcoming self-doubt.

Feb. 6
Indigenous Role Model Event
Now 10 years running and hosted by Gdoo-maawnjidimi Mompii Indigenous Student Services (GMISS), the Indigenous Role Model event is open to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous TMU community members and is part of TMU’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, giving non-Indigenous participants the opportunity to learn about the histories, experiences and successes of Indigenous Persons and role models across Turtle Island.

Feb. 7
TMU Bold Volleyball Beach Night
Escape the February cold with the TMU Bold Beach Night! Break out your Hawaiian shirt and other beach-themed gear and join other fans as the volleyball teams take on Waterloo. The first 300 fans receive a beach-themed giveaway!

Feb. 10 - 14
Choreographic Works 2025
Join the School of Performance for this four-day performance produced by Angela Blumberg and featuring original choreography by second- and third-year Performance Dance students.

Feb. 12
Honouring MMIWGM2S through three events
On Feb. 12, TMU will be hosting three events to honour and acknowledge Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Men and Two-Spirit Peoples. Join at 12 p.m. for Healing Through Crafting, where facilitator Cher Trudeau will take attendees through a crafting session for grief and healing. At 2 p.m., join for a Film Screening for MMIWGM2S, where guests will have a chance to see the 35-minute film Our Sisters In Spirit: MMIWG Documentary. At 5 p.m., the TMU community is invited to attend the Memorial Potluck Feast for MMIWGM2S with a dish to share.

Fraud prevention and Budgeting with BMO
Join our Fraud Prevention and Budgeting Workshop for international students with BMO to learn essential tips for protecting yourself from scams and managing your finances wisely.

Feb. 9-22
Vibrant Visions: The Art of Black Girlhood
The Vibrant Visions: The Art of Black Girlhood in Canada exhibition debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Lightbox. 

The opening reception for the exhibition takes place Feb. 9.

Rooted in the findings of the Mapping Black Girl Geographies and Belonging in Canada (MBG) project, led by Desirée de Jesus (York) in collaboration with Kisha McPherson (TMU), who is also a co-curator, and Crystal Webster (UBC), Vibrant Visions brings forward compelling narratives of identity, belonging and resistance while confronting systemic challenges such as racism, sexism and age-based discrimination. The opening reception is funded by The Creative School and Office of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation at Toronto Metropolitan University. 

Feb. 22
The MBA Tour Toronto
Connect with Ted Rogers MBA program representatives at the networking fair and resumé review clinic at the MBA Tour Toronto event. 

Feb. 25
TMU Black Studies Libraries Tour
This tour will include an overview of the Black Studies Libraries Guide, which showcases key scholarly and community resources, a presentation about geospatial and data resources for Black Studies, a visit to the virtual reality Immersion Studio showcasing its use by Black Studies instructors, and end at TMU’s Archives and Special Collections which will highlight pieces from those collections about Black Studies.

Special Exhibition Tour: Planetfall

Join Image Centre curator Paul Roth for a special tour of Michael Benson: Planetfall (external link) , where American artist Michael Benson uses raw picture data, sourced from space agency archives, of extraterrestrial imagery to rework and compose individual frames to produce highly detailed images of the planets and their orbiting moons. His photographs show these celestial bodies from unusual vantage points and render light and colour with startling clarity. 

Feb. 27 
Black Excellence Mixer
Join the sixth annual Black Excellence Mixer, where Black students, faculty and staff can authentically connect, support one another and share stories. Come together over good food, good music and great company to collectively redefine the singular narrative of "excellence" as the only path forward for Black academics, professionals and students. The event will explore what it means to thrive, to dream and to build a future rooted in authenticity, creativity and collective growth.

Feb. 27
StrikeUp 2025: The Resiliency of Women Entrepreneurs
This digital conference convenes women entrepreneurs with a united vision of equity and inclusive economic growth through entrepreneurship. Join Wendy Cukier, founder and academic director of the Diversity Institute and the academic research director of the Future Skills Centre, for a session titled “Reaping the benefits and managing the risks: Adopting responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace.”

Feb. 28
Pop up Free Store
Do you like free stuff and believe in giving gently-used items a second chance? The Sustainability Office’s pop-up Free Store is a one-stop shop for TMU students to pick-up secondhand treasures, all for free!
