Staying in touch with TMU can be a challenge for graduates living outside of Canada. This year,  TMU launched a new initiative designed to reconnect alumni with their alma mater, even from afar—the Poppy Project.

To foster a sense of belonging, the engagement team in University Advancement mailed out lapel poppies—the emblem of Remembrance Day— to graduates living outside of Canada. The lapel poppy is a well-known symbol of remembrance in Canada. By sending it to alumni living abroad, the Poppy Project aimed to remind graduates of the meaningful Canadian traditions they experienced during their time at TMU, creating a sense of comfort and connection.

"As we visit alumni around the world, we hear how much they miss their Canadian experiences—whether it’s enjoying Tim Hortons coffee or surviving a Canadian winter," said Rivi Frankle, AVP of University Advancement and Alumni Relations. "Sending a Remembrance Day poppy reconnects them to those memories while reminding them that they’ll always be part of our community."

An instagram post from alum Cassie Mitchele thanks TMU for sending a poppy postcard to her for Remembrance Day.

The Poppy Project delighted alumni like Cassie Mitchele.

The project seems to have struck a chord. Cassie Mitchele, a Theatre Performance graduate living in Japan, shared her delight on social media: "Nice surprise in the mail today! Thanks @alumnitmu!!"
