Zone Street Fair inspires students to take passion projects to the next level

All 10 of TMU’s zones were on hand to help students turn their passion into a career

The Zone Street Fair showcased successful Zone Learning startups and introduced students to the resources available at TMU that can help them launch their businesses. Photos by Andrew Ahmed.

Fall at Toronto Metropolitan University means endless opportunities for making your dreams come true. From launching a fashion brand to inventing the next big thing in health and wellness, students got a taste of what’s possible at this year’s Zone Street Fair.

The street fair showcased Zone Learning’s network of startups and founders while inspiring students to step out of their comfort zone and take the next step in turning their ideas into reality.

Nearly 3,000 students and community members came together on Gould Street for the street fair on September 18, 2024. Check out some of the highlights below.

The street fair connected students and TMU community members with startups from across all 10 Zone Learning zones, including Surf Beni from the Fashion Zone. Founder Benet Avery is a TRSM alumna and past ZON 100 student who gained experience and course credit through Zone Learning.

Zone Learning startups in the food and restaurant industry showed off their tasty treats. The Social Ventures Zone startup Do Good Donuts, seen here, hires and trains young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and helps them prepare to work in the community.

Students and TMU community members had the chance to learn about the Zones and ask for advice from successful entrepreneurs such as Prabaarja Bedi, founder of UNFabricated, a socially and environmentally sustainable fashion brand incubated in the Fashion Zone.

Science Discovery Zone startup Science Everywhere conducted a liquid nitrogen cloud experiment on Gould Street. The media and event company was founded by TMU PhD student Anthony Morgan.

Design Fabrication Zone startup Frontier offers hands-on projects, seminars and workshops that explore the realm of space technology. During the street fair, they hosted a DIY rocket workshop where students customized and launched their own rockets.

Students stopped to chat with Ten Four Pictures, a Transmedia Zone startup that creates commercials, music videos and feature films.

A highlight of the day was the recording of a live podcast. Students and community members stopped by to check out Toronto Tomorrow, a podcast by the Transmedia Zone, which airs Saturdays at 8 p.m. on 640 Toronto.
