TMU moves into the world’s top 15 per cent of universities in latest QS Rankings

TMU continues to strengthen its academic and scholarly, research and creative (SRC) excellence, as highlighted in the 2025 QS World University Rankings (external link) . Its position among the top 15 per cent of universities worldwide demonstrates TMU’s contributions to SRC and growing reputation in higher education.

The QS World University Rankings are the most widely read university rankings in the world, assessing over 1,500 universities and 15,700 academic programs across 105 countries and territories. They are the only rankings to highlight employability and sustainability, reflecting the growing demand to demonstrate real-world impact. 

University rankings are vital tools for educational institutions, providing benchmarks for assessing progress, identifying strengths and pinpointing areas for improvement. They also help attract faculty, staff, researchers and prospective students, who often use rankings as a source of insight into the university’s strengths and academic environment. More recently, rankings have begun reflecting the complete impact of universities by assessing contributions to sustainable development as part of their evaluation.

TMU’s performance in the rankings is driven by its strong showing in several key areas, including international faculty and citations per faculty member. TMU’s ability to attract and retain top-tier international faculty members has been recognized as an area of strength. This diverse group of educators brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise that enriches the school’s academic environment and contributes to its culture of innovation and international collaboration.

TMU has also been recognized for its excellence in research output, with a high number of citations per faculty member. This metric highlights the impactful SRC activity at the university, contributing to advancements across disciplines and reinforcing the university's reputation in scholarly, research and creative activities. 

The university also performed well in employment outcomes for its graduates. This success reflects the university's robust industry connections and highlights its effective preparation of students for the competitive job market, ensuring they are well-equipped to excel in their chosen careers.

“These results serve as both a recognition of our current successes, and a motivation to reach even greater heights in the future,” says Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano, provost and vice-president, academic. “It will take a collective effort among the entire TMU community – guided by the academic plan and strategic research plan – to continue our journey as a leading university.”

In addition to the world university ranking, QS also released its 2024 subject rankings in April. TMU has distinguished itself in several subject areas, including:

• Art and Design: TMU ranked in the top 200 universities worldwide 
• Architecture/Built Environment: TMU ranked in the top 200 universities worldwide
• Communication and Media Studies: TMU ranked in the top 250 universities worldwide

The Creative School and the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS), continue to develop new programming that advances teaching and research output in these subject areas. The Creative School recently launched a Master of Interior Design and PhD in Media & Design Innovation, and FEAS launched a new PhD in Architecture, building upon the school’s research capacity and providing unique options for students to pursue graduate education.
