Update on external review on open letter posted by TMU students
On November 7, Toronto Metropolitan University engaged the expertise of retired Chief Justice J. Michael MacDonald as an external reviewer to undertake a thorough, judicious review of an open letter directed to the administration of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law.
The review is now underway to determine whether the Student Code of Non-Academic Conduct has been breached and, if so, what actions are appropriate.
Mr. MacDonald will be meeting with affected members of the university community as part of his review. He has also reached out to the law students who participated in the open letter and is arranging to meet with them. Students who participated anonymously will be provided with an opportunity to come forward and also meet with Mr. MacDonald as part of this process. It is expected that this process will continue into the new year, following which Mr. MacDonald will issue a report to the university.

Determinations in the New Year
“We know that this is a very challenging and difficult time for many members of the TMU community. At difficult times like these, in addition to providing support, we also need to take actions that align with and reflect our organization’s values,” said President Mohamed Lachemi. “This review will give TMU community members an opportunity to be heard and I look forward to receiving Mr. MacDonald’s determinations in the New Year.”
