From wellness to AI use, TMU has both fun and informative events on offer this October.

October 2 - 6
TMU's 2nd Annual Wellbeing Week
A university-wide week-long event dedicated to encouraging ongoing dialogue on mental health and well-being while promoting services and supports available on campus, including sunset yoga at TMU’s Urban Farm.

October 2  - November 10
Displaying Pride Design Contest
Positive Space is looking for poster designs for its 2023 Displaying Pride Design Contest. Up to Friday, November 10, TMU students can submit their design of an original graphic/poster that signals an inclusive and welcoming space on campus for 2SLGBTQ+ community members. The winner of the design contest will win $200. Check out other Pride events this month on the Pride events site.

What Will AI Mean for Free Expression?
Artificial intelligence technologies are powerful curators of information and arbiters of online content. But they can be used to supercharge deception and misinformation. Join a panel of experts who explore these monumental challenges and discuss what options we have.

Women represent 47 per cent of Canada’s workforce, yet they still make up less than 25 per cent of people employed in STEM careers. An event on Oct. 4 will discuss this gender imbalance.

Adjusting the variables: Writing the new formula for women in STEM
Join female leaders in academia and industry for a frank discussion about what needs to change to address the gender imbalance in STEM fields and chart a way forward for the next generation of women and girls.

The Politicization of U.S. Intelligence: Causes and Consequences
John A. Gentry, adjunct professor at Georgetown University and former CIA analyst, will discuss his research interests primarily in intelligence studies. His most recent book is Neutering the CIA: Why US Intelligence Versus Trump Has Long-Term Consequences (Armin Lear Press, 2023).

Toxic Chemicals and Your Health: Are Regulations Protecting Canadians?
Canadians are exposed to a cocktail of toxic chemicals, but they are kept largely in the dark about the chemicals’ harmful effects. What can be done to enhance protections? Bruce Lanphear, one of Canada’s leading authorities on environmental health, and professor of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, will answer this question in a conversation with reporter Sandra Bartlett.

AI 101: Understanding the Technology that is Transforming, Teaching, and Learning
Curious about what students think of Generative AI? Join us for a student panel discussion where attendees will have an opportunity to hear what our students have to say about this technology. What’s ethical use from the student perspective? Are students anxious about how this technology will impact their future? What do students hope instructors understand?

Free Soup Day
The delicious soup offerings at the Hub Café are well-known to the TMU community, with a rotating menu of made-in-house recipes available every day. The Office of the President has partnered with TMU Eats to offer a free soup day once per month.

Pink Libraries Tour: Day 1
A guided tour of the Libraries with a focus on 2SLGBTQ+ materials and activities. Learn about search techniques using our Queer and Trans Research Guides, explore the Collaboratory and Immersion Studio, visit the Law Library and tour 2SLGBTQ+ collections unique to TMU at the Archives and Special Collections!

Exploring Systemic Islamophobia in Canada
A panel of leading experts will examine how Islamophobia is enabled, perpetuated, and even rendered respectable in Canada. What can be done to help Canada fulfill its promise of being an inclusive democratic society?

Lecture by Canada Gairdner International Award Laureate Bonnie L. Bassler
The Faculty of Science is proud to host 2023 Canada Gairdner International Award Laureate, Dr. Bonnie L. Bassler, as part of Gairdner Science Week. Dr. Bassler will be discussing Quorum Sensing Across Domains: From Viruses to Bacteria to Eukaryotes.
