Meet Dr. Teresa Chan, founding dean of TMU’s School of Medicine

Dr. Chan joined Toronto Metropolitan University in July 2023 as the founding dean of the School of Medicine and vice-president, medical affairs. She comes to TMU via McMaster University, where she was associate dean, continuing professional development and an associate professor, division of emergency medicine, department of medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She was also a clinician scientist with McMaster Education, Research, Innovation and Theory and has been a practising emergency physician with Hamilton Health Sciences since 2013. 

An educational leader and scientist, Dr. Chan has advanced the field of medical education by bringing innovative new approaches.Through her work in the classroom, in clinical spaces and beyond, she also inspires future physicians to advance social justice. 

TorontoMet Today recently sat down with Dr. Chan to discuss how we can equip the physicians of tomorrow to succeed, why Brampton is the perfect place for a new school of medicine, and why she’s glad she didn’t take a straightforward path to becoming a doctor. Watch the video above.
