Get to know the student services at TMU to guide you from orientation to graduation
As students, faculty and staff return to the TMU campus after the winter break, some may have noticed a new campaign rolled out featuring different student services on an installation in the SLC, billboards on Nelson Mandela Way, or on digital screens and posters across campus. But what is it all about?
The 2022/2023 academic year is a unique time as students across three graduating years are experiencing life on the TMU campus for the first time and they may not be aware of all the services available to them, or where to find them. Shifting back to in-person learning and activities can be exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. Because of this, the team in the Office of the Vice-Provost, Students (OVPS) saw an opportunity to raise awareness among students about the vast network of supports and services available to them through their campaign “We’re all yours.”
“The goal of this campaign and the work that we do in the OVPS is to not have a student crossing the stage at convocation wishing they knew sooner about the supports available to them at TMU,” says Jen McMillen, vice-provost, students.
With over 430 full-time staff in the OVPS, whose purpose is to support student success – as each individual student defines it – students do not have to navigate their education alone, says McMillen. Whether they are facing challenges and need help, or if they are thriving and want to start a club or enhance their skills, there are people, services and programs to guide students on their journey at TMU. Here is a brief outline of those services:
Admissions, financial assistance and graduation
The Office of the Registrar (RO) supports the student academic experience, from finding an undergraduate program to graduation. ServiceHub is the front-line service centre for the RO and can assist students with undergraduate admissions, fees, financial assistance, exams, course enrolment, applying to graduate and more.
Health and well-being
Student Wellbeing provides a holistic and integrated set of health, well-being and academic services and supports. They are committed to developing and sustaining environments that foster well-being and student success, including academic accommodations, health services, counselling and programs to help students thrive.
Coursework, campus life and career advice
Student Affairs provides academic, professional and personal development opportunities to students. Access career education, work opportunities on and off campus and support navigating your student experience from the Career, Co-op and Student Success Centre, learning communities, campus engagement opportunities and mentoring support from Student Life and Learning Support, and information and support about living on campus from Housing & Residence Life. Consent Comes First works to provide consent education to our campus, while supporting students experiencing sexual violence, and the Office of Student Care is available to provide support to students experiencing distress.
Getting and staying active
Athletics & Recreation (external link) inspires students to move because regular physical activity benefits academic and work performance, individual well-being and helps to make connections to others in our community. Cheer on the TMU Bold (external link) or check out a TMU Recreation program or activity to stay active!
Local and global experiences
International Student Enrolment, Education & Inclusion (ISEEI) helps to create a learning environment that understands and advocates for international student needs. The International Enrolment team assists prospective international undergraduate students and their supporters as they navigate their journey to TMU, and the English Language Institute offers English upskilling and pathway programs.
“As the campaign unfolds, students will start to understand how these many units within the OVPS are connected and can help them navigate their unique TMU journeys,” said McMillen. “They may not know exactly what they need, but they will know that there is help available and we will be able to point them in the right direction.”
