Toronto Metropolitan University and Magnet are pleased to announce the newly appointed members of Magnet’s inaugural Advisory Board.

Magnet (external link) , a not-for-profit social innovation platform co-founded at TMU, was launched in 2014 with a mission to create a sustainable, inclusive and resilient economy for Canada’s future.

“The establishment of the inaugural Advisory Board is a key step in Magnet’s evolution and demonstrates exceptional support for Toronto Metropolitan University as a leader in the future of work,” said Steven N. Liss, TMU’s vice-president, research and innovation. “By leveraging our research, expertise and partnerships we bring value to the Canadian economy and enhance opportunities for the people of Canada.”

As part of TMU’s research and innovation initiatives tackling real-world issues, Magnet’s vision is of a sustainable, publicly funded employment and training system that supports an inclusive workforce, economic development and social prosperity across Canada.

Magnet’s social innovation and technology platform serves to support businesses of all sizes to connect with talent and stakeholders such as service providers, industry associations, policy makers and researchers, and to collaborate to deliver workforce development solutions. Magnet also partners with educational institutions, government and industry associations to lead projects that not only bridge the labour market dynamics between supply and demand, but importantly remove barriers to employment for underrepresented groups.

“The appointment of the Advisory Board brings outstanding leaders together from across Canada, representing a cross-section of organizations and interests, skills and expertise,” says Mark Patterson, the executive director of Magnet. “The board will advise and provide guidance that will be so critical in Magnet’s plans to put Canada at the forefront of the future of work.”

Board mandate

The initial mandate of the board will be to provide guidance and foresight to TMU and Magnet on establishing its governance framework and ensuring a strategic growth agenda.

The inaugural board members are highly accomplished, purpose-driven leaders, each an expert in their field and dedicated to driving innovation and systems-level change in the Canadian employment and training ecosystem. The Advisory Board represents a diverse range of prominent voices from various industries and sectors across multiple regions in Canada.
